Migrating to Shopify Safely
Moving your online store to a new platform is nerve-wracking, but with proper planning, you can migrate without losing sales or SEO rankings.
Pre-Migration Planning
Document everything: product data, customer data, order history, URL structures, redirects needed, and integrations to replicate. Set up your new Shopify store completely before switching over.
Data Migration
Export products, customers, and orders from your current platform. Shopify accepts CSV imports for products. For complex migrations, use tools like Cart2Cart or LitExtension, or hire a developer.
SEO Preservation
This is critical. Map every old URL to its new Shopify equivalent and set up 301 redirects. Update your sitemap. Resubmit to Google Search Console. Monitor rankings for 30 days post-migration.
Testing
Before going live: test every product page, place test orders, verify payment processing, check email notifications, test on mobile, and verify all redirects work.
Go-Live Strategy
Migrate during a low-traffic period. Have your old site ready to re-enable if something goes wrong. Monitor everything closely for the first 48 hours.
